Why do we ring the bell in temples?

We do many things in our life that is carried away by cultural beliefs and ancient traditions. But, do we really know the science behind them? Do we take time to ponder and reason with the WH question – ‘why’? Don’t worry, today I’ll break the barriers of spiritualism and take you on the scientific journey of our beliefs…

Ummm, do we ring the bell to wake up the God? Nah…He is everywhere watching us 24×7. Or do we ring it to enter his home, like we do while ringing the doorbell of others? Nah!! Then why do we ring the bell??

The temples bells are not just any ordinary metal. It is made up of various metals like manganese, zinc, cadmium, chromium, lead, copper and nickel. The bell produces long echo of the sound ‘OM’ that empties the thoughts in our mind. The real science behind the bell lies in the proportion of the metals it is made up of. It produces a distinct sound that creates the unity of the right and the left brain. The moment you ring the bell, it produces an acute and enduring sound which lasts for minimum of seven seconds in echo mode good enough to touch the seven healing centres or chakras in our body.

The sound of the bell migrates the mind to a trance state. A Trance denotes any state of awareness or consciousness other than normal waking consciousness. Trance states may occur involuntarily and unbidden. It is associated with hypnosis, meditation, magic, flow, and prayer.

Our mind is so occupied with thoughts that the only way to awaken it is through shock! The bell provides the medium of shock and works as an anti-dote to our mind.

Another reason behind ringing the bell, is to ward off the evil forces with the positive vibrations of OM. The sound produced from the bell is uninterrupted, reverberating, sonorous and deep.

Next time you visit a temple, don’t forget to ring the bell!

Namaste! I'm a budget traveller & I haven't left my career to travel, because I love my weekdays as much as my weekends. With my full time job, I've managed to leave my footprints in a dozen of countries & a thousand cities. I am a bit crazy about the fact that I tend to challenge myself with budget travel. Including return tickets and accommodation I have travelled to Sri Lanka at INR 7000, Bhutan at INR 6000, Scuba Dive at INR 500, Free Snorkelling in Indian Ocean and so many more. I'm also an hobbyist photographer who loves to capture memories. I love being consumed by fitness activities and sports that lead to an aberration to normalcy. I believe in LIVING life & not just survive. I'm a human being who's humble enough to know that I'm not better than anyone but wise enough to know that I'm different from the rest. If you have the power to make someone happy, do it now, the world needs it :) Spread smiles :)
